Marvel’s ‘Cloak & Dagger’ Drops A Direct Reference To ‘Luke Cage’

Cloak & Dagger Luke CageAlthough the films and television series within the Marvel Cinematic Universe have little to no overlap, the television series themselves have found impressive ways to reference each other – even if they are on separate networks. Through that, we find an exciting connection between Cloak & Dagger and Luke Cage.

SPOILER ALERT: The following article contains details from episode 8 of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger entitled “Ghost Stories”.

There is an exciting direct reference to Luke Cage during”Ghost Stories” in the scene where Detective Brigid O’Reilly (Emma Lahana) and Officer Fuchs (Lane Miller) have a discussion about what they witnessed that evening. The two brought Detective Connors (J.D. Evermore) into custody after they worked with Tyrone Johnson/Cloak (Aubrey Joseph) to trick Connors into admitting that he shot and killed Billy Johnson eight years ago.

Officer Fuchs reveals to Connors that he was deeply impressed by Tyrone’s abilities that he demonstrated. Detective O’Reilly responds to Fuchs with a statement that reveals her connection to a certain character from Luke Cage:

Detective O’Reilly: I’m from New York. I’ve seen it before,” said Detective O’Reilly. “Have I ever told you about my friend Misty?

Officer Fuchs: No.

Detective O’Reilly: I’ll tell you about her later.

Detective O’Reilly was obviously referring to Misty Knight (Simone Missick) – the beloved heroine of Harlem and ally to Luke Cage (Mike Colter). Unfortunately for O’Reilly, she will never have the opportunity to tell Officer Fuchs about Misty because at the end of “Ghost Stories”, she finds his corpse stuffed inside a refrigerator.

Does this direct reference to Luke Cage hint at more connectivity and perhaps a crossover with Cloak & Dagger? Given that one is a Netflix exclusive and the other is broadcast on Freeform, that may be unlikely but it would certainly be cool to see Detective O’Reilly and Misty Knight together onscreen.

The series stars Olivia Holt, Aubrey Joseph, Gloria Reuben, Andrea Roth, J.D. Evermore, Miles Mussenden, Carl Lundstedt, Emma Lahana, Jaime Zevallos and Noëlle Renée Bercy. Here is the synopsis for “Ghost Stories”:

MARVEL’S CLOAK & DAGGER – “Ghost Stories” – Tandy and Melissa prepare to commemorate the 8th anniversary of Nathan’s passing with their annual memorial tradition. When Tandy gets a key piece of information regarding her father, she uses this day to try and finally clear her father’s name. Meanwhile, Tyrone’s parents prefer not to mark the day Billy passed, but Tyrone’s need to keep Billy’s memory alive causes conflict among the three. Deciding today is the day he gets a confession out of Det. Connors, Tyrone goes to Det. O’Reilly for help. This episode of “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” airs Thursday, July 19 (8:00 – 9:00 p.m. EDT) on Freeform. (Freeform/Alfonso Bresciani)

The next episode of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger airs on Thursday, July 26 at 8 p.m. EDT on Freeform.

Meanwhile, all episodes of the first two seasons of Marvel’s Luke Cage are available to stream on Netflix.
