Comcast has issued an official statement revealing that it has bowed out of its bidding war with Disney to acquire 21st Century Fox.
“Comcast does not intend to pursue further the acquisition of the Twenty-First Century Fox assets and, instead, will focus on our recommended offer for Sky.”
Brian L. Roberts, Chairman and CEO of the Comcast Corporation, had the following to say:
“I’d like to congratulate Bob Iger and the team at Disney and commend the Murdoch family and Fox for creating such a desirable and respected company.”
After 21st Century Fox accepted the Walt Disney Company’s $52.4 billion all-stock offer for the latter’s key assets, including the company’s movie and television studios, Comcast bested the bid with their own all-cash $65 billion offer for the same assets. In response, Disney raised their offer to $71.3 billion split evenly between cash and stock.
Comic book fans are well aware that the deal allows Disney to finally have the film rights for the X-Men and Fantastic Four characters, with the option to absorb them into the established Marvel Cinematic Universe. This scenario that once seemed like nothing more than an implausible fanboy fever dream is now finally becoming a reality.
