The Lucasfilm panel was one of the most epic SDCC moments that I have experienced at the convention. It was filled to the brim with surprises. The crowd was ready and excited to be there. Many of the people spent days just to get a glimpse of anything Star Wars related and I assure you they were not disappointed. Even before the panel started they were chanting and shouting pumping themselves up for Star Wars.
Veteran host Chris Hardwick moderated the panel, as he was excited to bring out Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Lawerence Kasdan. One of the first things brought up by Kathleen was a big “thank you” to the fans that have kept the series alive. J.J. Abrams went on to discuss where they are in the process of production and he stated that they have a rough cut of the film, but still editing and fine tuning the film. While this was being discussed some new images were shown on the big screens and the fans in the room started to get more and more excited with every new image revealed.
Soon after this the first fan question was taken from a guy dressed up as Batman, but the question preceding him the next question led to Kathleen revealing that Gareth Edwards would begin shooting in three weeks.
It was also stated that they are not ready to show any new footage or trailers, but they brought along a brand new behind the scenes video that revealed a lot. You can see the clip here:
After the clip John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Isaac were welcomed to the stage. They each discussed aspects of working on the film as well as taking some more fan questions. Isaac had an interesting point by saying this character probably grew up hearing stories of what the rebels did during the time of the original series.
Soon after this Chris Hardwick stated that these were the characters on the light side, but wanted to bring out the dark side. He then proceeded to introduce Adam Driver, Domhnall Gleeson, and Gwendoline Christie who are playing the characters Kylo Ren, General Hux, and Captain Phasma. They each also discussed their roles in the film as well as take more audience questions. In a mistake that was not ignore Domhnall let slip that the new dark side base in known as Starkiller base in reference to the unused original name of Luke Skywalker.
The biggest surprises came when Chris brought out Carrie Fisher followed soon after by Mark Hamill. Mark and Carrie each got a chance to discuss coming back to the role and a picture of Mark from 1976 was shown on the big screen. Shown Here:
In the most surprising and audience pleasing moment Harrison Ford was the last one introduced to the stage and fans were cheering and giving him a huge standing ovation.
A final series of fan questions was asked and Harrison described that he loved the script and working on the film was a great experience after not thinking of playing Han Solo again
The panel then began to come to an end, but in a final surprise. J.J. Abrams asked the fans if they liked Star Wars music. It was then described that a surprise concert was planned and everyone in attendance of the panel was invited to it. All the fans were then led on the pier nearby where a stage was set up nearby as well as concessions and a booth that let everyone get a free lightsaber for the show. The concert was kicked off by an appearance from the cast, J.J. Abrams, and Kathleen Kennedy followed by a brief video clip of John Williams. The night ended with a fireworks display that ended the panel and the event with a bang.
All in all it’s going to be difficult to top this for SDCC 2015. Warner Brothers and Fox have a lot of work to do, but as a Star Wars fan this was one of the coolest things I was able to take part in.
