Director Kenneth Branagh is already lining up a cast for the long-promised Artemis Fowl adaptation, with Dame Judi Dench in discussions for a part. Variety has revealed that Dench has recently entered talks with Branagh to enter the adaptation Eoin Colfer’s urban fantasy series. What role Dench will play in the movie is not clear at this time.
The series concerns the machinations of a young heir to a corporation – Artemis Fowl II – who has discovered that his company is at risk of losing its fortune. To restore his finances, Artemis Fowl then seeks to exploit the economy of the hidden Fairy race after holding one of their own ransom. However, Fowl soon discovers that he’s in over his head as his get-rich-quick scheme invites the attention of various supernatural forces that seek to destroy the balance in the world. Artemis Fowl uses his cunning to stop greater threats while becoming a better person in aiding the Fairies with their own troubles, and uses their abilities to determine what really happened to his missing father after an incident with the Russian mafia.
Artemis Fowl heads to theaters on August 9, 2019. The film will be directed by Kenneth Branagh, written by Conor McPherson, and produced by Branagh and Harvey Weinstein.
