Given how last year’s Paul Feig helmed Ghostbusters reboot failed to reap in huge box office numbers and had a divisive reception amongst his fanbase and critics, it is safe to say that the franchise has reached a bit of a stalemate as far as a new theatrical film goes.
The Ghostbusters franchise still remains a merchandising juggernaut with two cartoon shows, video games and comic books under its belt yet there is one medium of entertainment the Ghostbusters has yet to embark on just yet: a live-action television series.
At a recent event promoting the partnership between Ghostbusters and Netflix’s hit series Stranger Things, Cinemablend poised the question to Ghostbusters co-creator and Ray Stantz himself, Dan Aykroyd of the possibility of a live-action take on the franchise:
“Yes. Absolutely. Sure. Sure. I can see several possibilities there. You know? Take a cue from these guys in Stranger Things and maybe have the Ghostbusters in high school or something.”
With Stranger Things not only continuing to surge in popularity and heavily featuring its young cast donned in Ghostbusters Halloween costumes, it is a possibility that the show’s success could help pave the way for something such as a live-action television series featuring New York City’s favorite team of parapsychologists. However, considering how long a third Ghostbusters film featuring the original cast was in development hell and eventually bringing forth 2016’s Ghostbusters reboot, it remains to be seen if this idea will ever pan out.
The classic two Ghostbusters movies and the reboot can all be viewed on DVD and Blu-Ray.
