‘Dark Universe’: Writer Ed Solomon Departs ‘Invisible Man’

Universal Dark UniverseUniversal’s interconnected universe of classic movie monsters appears to have gone to a halt. The aptly dubbed Dark Universe has seen the release ofThe Mummy, the postponed production of The Bride of Frankenstein, the exit of head producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan, and now the loss of Invisible Man writer, Ed Solomon.

The film, set to star Johnny Depp as the titular character, was announced back in 2016 with Solomon attached to write an updated version of the classic horror story. This along with The Bride of FrankensteinThe Wolfman, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon were intended to help flesh out the cinematic universe that launched with The Mummy in 2017.

Speaking with Digital Spy, Ed Solomon had this to say about his departure, and the state of the Dark Universe:

“At the end of the day, I think Universal and I had a different idea of what the movie was gonna be. We began thinking that our notions would meld, and I should’ve listened more closely to what they really were wanting.

I think Universal has had to come to a kind of reckoning of, ‘What are we doing with the Dark Universe?’ and, ‘What is our real intention with it?’, and I think they’re reconfiguring it now, which I think is probably good.

So I’m not working on it.”

As of now, the fate of the Dark Universe seems uncertain. Even with big name actors like Depp and Javier Bardem attached to star as these classic monsters, Universal might need to go back to the drawing board on this one.
