Fresh off its Sundance premiere XYZ Films and WME Global sold U.S. distribution rights to RLJ Entertainment for the action flick Bushwick starring Guardians of the Galaxy’s David Bautista and Brittany Snow, for seven-figures according to a press release from the latter. RLJ Entertainment is the distribution company behind S. Craig Zahler’s cannibal Western Bone Tomahawk, which released in late 2015 and starred Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins, Matthew Fox, Kurt Russell, and Kurt Rusell’s mustache. They’re staking their claim on off-kilter genre material, which Bushwick definitely qualifies, because, um, Texas invades New York, guys.
Directed by Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott (Cooties) from on a script by Nick Damici and Graham Reznick, based a story by Murnion and Milott, the official summary says the film “introduces us to Lucy, who emerges from a Brooklyn subway to find that her neighborhood is under attack by black-clad military soldiers. An ex-Marine corpsman, Stupe, reluctantly helps her fight for survival through a civil war, as Texas attempts to secede from the United States of America.”
“RLJ Entertainment is a fearless distributor that specializes in releasing unique and courageous projects,” said Murnion and Milott. “Films like Bushwick, and their 2015 release, Bone Tomahawk, show their passion and commitment for working with filmmakers who challenge the conventions of genre films. We are thrilled about this partnership.”
It was produced by Bolotin, Bullet Pictures’ Adam Folk and Joseph Mensch of Mensch Productions. Executive producers included Bautista, Jonathan Meisner, Nick Spicer, and Todd Brown. Another deal for international distribution is underway with a major studio.
XYZ Films also has Zahler’s Tomahawk follow-up Brawl in Cell Block 99 stars Vince Vaughn and Don Johnson. They also have Apostle from The Raid filmmaker Gareth Evans and starring Legion (premiering on FX in a mere two weeks) and Beauty and the Beast star Dan Stevens, as well as the feature debut of Oscar-winner Andres Walters, I Kill Giants, starring Zoe Saldana, Imogen Poots, and Madison Wolfe.
Bushwick is currently without a release date, but expect to change soon as distribution rights get snapped up.
