Earlier today, it was reported that Cathy Yan has been tapped to direct Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Birds of Prey, the next film to feature Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Now, Variety’s Justin Kroll has revealed that Suicide Squad 2 has been moved out of the 2018 shoot.
Although Warner Bros. had previously targeted a fall 2018 production start date for the Suicide Squad sequel, with Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, Kroll reports that the film will now be “moving out of the 2018 shoot.” The decision to move forward with Birds of Prey was reportedly based on writer Christina Hodson’s screenplay for the project and the idea of introducing Batgirl to the DCEU before giving the character her own standalone film, similar to how Marvel Studios introduced Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War.

As for SUICIDE SQUAD 2, clearly moving out of 2018 shoot. The move to go with BOP not only had a lot to do with Hodson's script but also the idea of doing with BATGIRL what Marvel did with Black Panther in CIVIL WAR by introducing them into universe before giving them own film

Margot Robbie will also produce the Birds of Prey film under her LuckyChap Entertainment banner as part of a first look deal she has with the studio. Meanwhile, Suicide Squad 2 is set to be directed by Gavin O’Connor with Robbie, Jared Leto, and Will Smith returning for the sequel.
Both films are two of the many projects Warner Bros. has in development along with The Batman, a Flash standalone film, The New Gods, Man of Steel 2, Nightwing, Cyborg, Gotham City Sirens, Green Lantern Corps, Black Adam, Booster Gold, Justice League Dark, and a standalone Joker origin film separate from the shared cinematic universe.
