Every DC Comics Film, Ranked From Worst To Best

33. Supergirl

Supergirl

In 1984, this spin-off of the successful Superman movies was a massive failure in every way imaginable. Audiences rejected it out of hand for its incompetent storytelling, dialogue, and cheap-at-best effects. Worse, it squandered the potential of a much-needed superheroine film, souring any chance of getting another one for too long a time.

Interesting to include 2 animated movies on this list, but leave off several other really good ones, including Justice League War and Under the Red Hood. Also I’m curious what “mistakes of the past two movies” Nolan doubled-down on in TDKR. Overall it’s a great list!

    • Jon Negroni

That’s because Mask of the Phantasm and Killing Joke were both released in theaters, which is the criteria for this particular list. Though it would be fun to do another one in the future that ranks the top 20, including those movies.

As for Nolan’s TDKR mistakes, I’m talking mostly about gaps in both narrative in logic. While watching the movie, it’s usually not noticeable, but the more you think about the flow of these movies, the more annoying it is to catch various plot holes and inconsistencies. And it turns out that TDKR is the worst offender of this, especially in regards to how the plot is structured (Batman is not Batman, becomes Batman, stops again, rinse repeat).

      • AlienCowboyNinjaCop

Ah I didn’t think of the theatrical release! And yeah I definitely agree with the weird narrative gaps in TDKR. You can see them a bit in TDK and they’re covered up well by the non-linear script in Begins. Loved the article!

  • Marquis de Sade

Batman and Robin + Catwoman are the best adaptations of dc’s treasure trove of boring superheroes. TDK is by far the most overrated and coma-inducing with bvs and mos runnin’ a close 2 way tie.

(quickly flee this thread to avoid the slings n’ arrows of the dceu fangurls wrath.)

    • AlienCowboyNinjaCop

I mean, I’m kind of with you on the DCEU, but your anti-TDK statement is baffling.

      • Marquis de Sade

Real talk, I liked TDK…It’s only flaw was Batman’s fighting scenes. He was trained by the League of Shadows, and fought like a drunken sailor in a bar room brawl. It was an inexcusable contradiction…Now the dceu offerings are CRAP!

        • Napi

Decide then Stupid of Sade! You loved it or you hated it! hahaha

        • Matias Gagliardone

I agree, TDK is probably my favorite but I always thought Batman should fight WAY better, he was too slow. But the Joker was just perfect whenever I thik of the Joker I think of Heath Ledger and TDK

          • -ve

are fight scenes that important? to me, it’s the tension that counts. everybody knew Batman will beat Superman, everybody knew Superman will die in Doomsday’s hand. transformers have some good action scenes, don’t redeem the movies though.if Batman was real, that’s how he’d have to fight, wearing that much armor, remember the very first fight scene in Batman begins with him wearing suit? I could barely see him, but that gave me a pretty good idea, how Batman operated.

    • I’m the real Flash

again, you prove to be the most idiotic troll. go run in traffic moron.

  • Sallazar

    • Captain Obvious

Man of Steel and Superman II above The Dark Knight? Pure chaos.

      • AlienCowboyNinjaCop

        Thanks Captain Obvious

SS below Batman and Robin? Superman Returns above Batman Begins?
also, Watchmen is kind of low on your list.

    • Daniel

UPDATE: I’d add Wonder Woman after Superman Returns but before Batman Begins. Pretty terrific film.

  • 12stepCornelius

You gotta give it to Superman battling Nuclear Man on the moon though. That was like, my favorite fight scene of all time as a little kid lol.

  • 12stepCornelius

    My Top 5

    1. Man of Steel
    2. BvS
    3. The Dark Knight
    4. Batman (1989)
    5. Suicide Squad

    • Phouney Sly

You are sniffing glue man, where is Wonder Woman in that list? WW is at least in the top five.

  • batghost

Not bad. Mostly agree. Although I think Man of Steel should be a little closer to the top. (I probably like that movie more than the DC fanatics) Also, props for remembering Road to Perdition. That movie is great.

  • Rob

    Here is my top 10:

    1. The Dark Knight
    2. Batman (89)
    3. Superman II
    4. Road to Perdition
    5. Batman Returns
    6. History of Violence
    7. Mask of the Phantasm
    8. Superman: The Movie
    9. V for Vendetta
    10. Batman (the Adam West version. Sorry it is really schlock, but that movie was always an event for me when it came on TV as a child)

    • Jon Negroni

No worries. I’m just glad other people appreciate Mask of the Phantasm as much as me.

      • Rob

Yeah, I love almost all the animated Batman movies. Don’t like Superman: The Movie nearly as much as you though. I think it is a top 10 DC movie, but I found it a little boring and is definitely dated.

    • razorstar90

So far this is the best list from the comment section. A

    • Rob

I forgot Batman Begins. I would put at #9 and push everything else down.

  • MJH

    34 pages?! Fuuuuuck You.

    • Captain Obvious

      It’s literally a slider.

  • Captain Obvious

Only thing I would change is Batman & Robin being one above The Losers. Both movies suck, but Batman & Robin was bad in a harmful way.

  • chris

this list is TERRIBLE!!!! 1978 superman… i get it, its got nostalgia, its filled with hope etc… but its a BAD MOVIE. I marathoned all DC live action movies last month and this list is completely messed up.

    1. The Dark Knight
    2. Batman Begins
    3. V for Vendetta
    4. Watchmen
    5. The Dark Knight Rises
    6. Man of Steel

    23. Superman 4
    24. Batman Forever
    25. Batman and Robin
    26. The Return of Swamp Thing
    27. Catwoman

    • Captain Obvious

lol a list isn’t “terrible” just because you disagree with it.

    • mr nobody

agreed, SS is not better than V for vendetta. that’s insande

    • hocash

You have the Zack Snyder movies insanely high. They are awful movies. Suicide Squad over the original Superman tells you all you need to know about how bad this list is.

    • I see stupid people

You have MOS and BMvSM in your top 10? My gawd….

      • -ve

I could live with Watchmen in those two’s place instead.

    • Phouney Sly

@chris – You may not like 1978 Superman but it is the precursor to the modern super hero movie. In it’s day, the production value and special effects were considered atypical for the genre. This movies won an Oscar or two if I recall correctly. Lastly, keep in mind that the blend of comedy and drama that is the standard formula in pretty much all MCU films was started here with 1978 Supes. Just sayin’

  • mr nobody

Suicide Squad above V for Vendetta is ridiculous.

    • -ve

      amen brother.

  • Carl

Pretty good list but Suicide Squad should be below BvS and Green Lantern should be above them. lol

    • Jon Negroni

Interesting take. For me, the only one of those three movies I’d watch on a rainy day (and they’re the only choices) is Suicide Squad.

      • Carl

I’m up for re-watching GL now, haven’t seen it in awhile. I’ll never watch BvS or SS again.

        • Napi

Prefering GL 2011 over BvS? You are retarded or something… no! wait! you are a MCU fan! *voice at the background* “what’s the difference?” hahahaha

          • Carl

Well, there goes all your credibility.

          • Napi

Credibility?? What are you talking about MCU/retard man?

          • Carl

There you go again. Throwing around base insults like a child.

          • Napi

NO Carl, there’s a difference between insults and reality, sorry if reality is insulting for you.

          • Matias Gagliardone

It’s not a reality, being a MCU fan doesn’t make you retarded. I am a MCU fan and a DCEU fan, I don’t really understand why you have to like just one of the two

          • CyrilEbonyc

You’re a disgrace to the human race. I hope reality isn’t insulting for you.

          • Napi

You like football… Who is the disgrace?

          • CyrilEbonyc

            Still you.

          • Maximillian Pegasus

He likes them funny, it doesn’t matter if it’s bad.

          • Carl

I like movies that have a plot and try to make their characters interesting. GL wasn’t a good movie but I enjoyed parts of it. I found it to be a big missed opportunity. Keeping the main plot on Earth was a bad choice. That training scene on Oa was great and showed the real potential of a GL movie. BvS and SS are just boring, lack direction and fail to do anything of real interest with their characters. They are nearly un-watchable.

Make bad jokes and false implications all you want but I love the Nolan Batman movies. GL was reviewed just as poorly as BvS and SS so humor had nothing to do with it. SS tried to be funny after BvS was serious to a fault but it failed at that too.

          • Matias Gagliardone

I agree BvS is way better than Green Lantern but there is really not need to insult someone for liking it and there is definitely no need to hate the MCU for that

          • LupeX

He’s a hater, he knows SS isnt the film that either MoS or BvS is. it’s hate campaign strategy

  • Jay Kelley

    This list is terrible.

  • Thanostic

    Wow…that’s a lot of not-very-good movies. Here’s my list:
    1. The Dark Knight
    2. Dark Knight Rises
    3. Man of Steel
    4. Batman Begins
    5. Suicide Squad
    6. Batman v Superman
    7. Superman II
    8. Superman
    9. Watchmen
    10. V for Vendetta
    Pass on the rest.

  • Joe Valente

Is this list a troll list or?

  • Jo Hunter

Here’s my list, based on my level of enjoyment (because that’s what seeing movies is all about). That said, anything 20 and below is based on the pain I felt seeing it.
    1. The Dark Knight
    2. Batman v Superman UE
    3. Batman Begins
    4. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
    5. Man of Steel
    6. The Dark Knight Rises
    7. Batman 1989
    8. Superman II
    9. Suicide Squad
    10. Superman the Movie
    11. Batman: The Killing Joke
    12. Red 2
    13. Batman Returns
    14. Watchmen
    15, Superman Returns
    16. The Losers
    17. Superman III
    18, Batman Forever
    19. Green Lantern
    20. Batman & Robin
    21. Supergirl
    22. Superman IV
    23. Steel
    24. Return of Swamp Thing
    25. Catwoman

  • Manu Fields

NO WAY Superman Returns above Watchmen and V for Vendetta. This is crap.

  • Keiran S-C

MoS would easily be number 1its the perfect superhero film imo, followed by the dark knight and BVS not far behind around 4th 5th

  • LupeX

Not sure to make of your list apart from … opinions I guess. I tend not to lionize history. Superman and Superman II are legacy films but not without their problems, they dont hold up very well. To place BvS as the #20 film on this list is an “interesting” choice to say the least. Maybe you’ll join us in the 21Century sometime soon lol
My list of those I care to even rank goes:
    15. Batman Forever 14. Perdition, 13. The Losers, 12 A History of, 11. Rises, 10.Batman 89, 9.Skwad, 8.V, 7.Superman II, 6.Superman, 5.Begins, 4.WATCHMEN, 3.Man of Steel, 2.Batman V Superman, 1.TDK

  • JEB

    This list is completely Fu*ked

  • 12stepCornelius

God this list is based af. SS and Swamp Thing better than MoS? LMAO. And of course, TDK gets #1. But I guess that’s just your opinions.

  • kd_drunkenmaster

Agree with the top 5, but not in that order.
    1. Batman Begins (Yeah)
    2. The Dark Knight
    3. Wonder Woman
    4. Superman
    5. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm

  • 12stepCornelius

    UPDATED list:

    1. Man of Steel
    2. Batman v Superman UE
    3. Wonder Woman
    4. Batman Begins
    5. Watchmen
    6. The Dark Knight
    7. The Dark Knight Rises
    8. Batman 1989
    9. Batman Returns
    10. Superman: The Movie

And those are just live action and more along the lines of more recognizable comic book adaptations, unlike History of Violence (which was crazy good) but I hadn’t found out that was a comic book first until just recently.

  • Jamface

I thought The Losers was really good. Sad there was no sequel.

  • Ana Johnson

    where is BvS?

  • I see stupid people

I’m sorry, I tried to take this listing seriously, I really did.

  • Wait, why are there only a couple of animated movies? These had to be theatrical releases, and The Killing Joke gets in because it had a night event showing right?

It’s a shame, because I’d put most of the direct-to-video movies at the top of any DC movie list. Wonder Woman (2009) probably tops everything for me.

  • Maxi Iroh

    1- TDK
    2- Batman Begins
    3- MoS
    4- Watchmen
    5- BvS UE
    6- V for Vendetta
    7- Wonder Woman ————– edit ———-
    8- Batman Returns
    9- Constantine
    10- TDK Rises
    11- Batman
    12- Superman
    13- Superman II
    14- Red
    115- Superman Returns
    116- Suicide Squad
    117- Batman Forever
    118- Green Lantern
    119- Batman & Robin
    120- Catwoman

This list is an inside joke among your staff right. I don’t usually post negative comments plus I knew I would disagree with some of this list but surely you guys can’t be serious.

sorry but suicide squad is not better than bvs, v for vendetta, Constantine, red, MOS and i haven’t seen JL yet but it can’t be worse than it

    • Maxi Iroh

      It isn’t

  • I liked WW but feel that the praise it gets is way too high. To be honest it just never clicked enough for me to watch it again. I saw TDK 8 times in theaters as it was such a powerful and layered film (all 3 of TDK films have layered messages in them) but WW just felt like a retread of Donner’s Superman IMO.

I know I’m in the minority here but I’d rather see a Zack Snyder DCEU film than any Marvel films (at this point – loved Ph. 1 films). He just really brings something unique and different than what we keep getting w all of the MCU films (light, poppy w no real stakes involved).

    • Scott Whalen

I also can’t understand the love appeal of Wonder Woman. I liked the movie and it had great moments. But, it’s not #2 worthy on this list.

  • Maxi Iroh

SS better than JL, MoS, BvS, V for Vendetta and a whole lot more?
SS should be around Green Lantern’s rank.

  • Pedro Fortunato

V for Vendeta should be top 5 and Wonder Woman is way overrated (could be top ten, but not second place).

  • Pablo Alberto Escalante

what ? wonder woman 2 ? are you insane ? above superman the movie ???
