X-Men & Fantastic Four Name Dropped In Disney-Fox Merger Announcement

Disney Fox Marvel Avengers X-Men Fantastic FourWhoomp there it is. With the ink still drying on the $52.4 billion dollar merger between The Walt Disney Co. and 21st Century Fox, details have begun to emerge. The terms, which includes  Twentieth Century Fox, Fox Searchlight Pictures and Fox 2000, specifically calls out the X-Men, Deadpool and Fantastic Four in the acquisition.

Break out the party hats. In layman’s terms, Marvel’s first family, comedian and mutants are coming home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“The agreement also provides Disney with the opportunity to reunite the X-Men, Fantastic Four and Deadpool with the Marvel family under one roof and create richer, more complex worlds of inter-related characters and stories that audiences have shown they love.”

While fans and stockholders clearly benefit from the overall deal as it also includes Fox’s stake in Hulu (where Marvel’s Runaways streams) and huge franchises like Alien and Avatar, Marvel Studios and its fans clearly have the most to gain.

With the untitled Avengers 4 set to close out the first era of Marvel films in 2019, the deal opens the door for at least another decade of interesting stories and possibilities. With the addition of these characters, the only two who are not owned solely by Marvel is Spider-man (but there is a deal in place between Disney and Sony) and a stand-alone Hulk as Universal still has domestic distribution rights.

But it is a great day to be an MCU fan, bub.
