Stepping into any iconic role is tough, especially if it’s one that was portrayed by Harrison Ford. Ever since Phil Lord and Chris Miller signed on to write and direct a Star Wars film following the adventures of a young Han Solo, the hunt has been on for an actor that can step into the role of the famous space smuggler. In a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Disney has reportedly tested “more than 2,500 actors” for the role.
Though The Force Awakens was a cast of relative unknowns, the Han Solo film, which operates on a working title of “Red Cup”, has tested a variety of actors between the ages of 18 and 32 with differing levels of stardom. According to THR’s sources, Disney and Lucasfilm are looking for a young actor that “can be funny and charming as well as handle the expected action scenes”, and have even tested some comedians for the role.
Notable names of actors who have read for the part include include Dave Franco (Neighbors, 21 Jump Street), Miles Teller (Whiplash, The Spectacular Now), Aaron-Taylor Johnson (Godzilla, Kick-Ass), Nick Robinson (Jurassic World), Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Leo Howard (Kickin’ It), Chandler Riggs (The Walking Dead), and Tony Oller (The Purge). Other names in the conversation include Logan Lerman (Fury, ThePerks of Being a Wallflower), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction, What Richard Did), and Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent).
It’s certainly a diverse list with a lot of talent, as Disney is definitely doing their best to find an actor that can not only channel Harrison Ford, but fit the tone of Lord and Millers’ style of filmmaking exemplified in The Lego Movie and 21 Jump Street. Considering the film is shooting for a May 2018 release date, it’s likely we’ll get a casting confirmation in the next few months.
The currently untitled Star Wars Han Solo film is set for release on May 25th, 2018.
