Disney Releases New ‘Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge’ Details

Star Wars Millennium Falcon Galaxy's Edge DisneyAt a special event tonight, Disney unveiled some new details on their upcoming Star Wars entertainment being constructed at their theme parks.

At a panel at Galactic Nights, a special event held at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Scott Trowbridge, Portfolio Creative Executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, Robin Reardon, Executive Creative Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering, Chris Beatty, Executive Creative Director at Walt Disney Imagineering, and Doug Chiang, VP/Creative Director at Lucasfilm gave some new information on Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Much inspiration for the layout and design of the land came from Ralph McQuarrie’s original Star Wars concept art, with Vader’s Castle getting special mention.

Chiang noted that there will be a full fleet of X-Wings built for the 14-acre land and that the life-size Millenium Falcon will serve as that attraction’s entrance. On the Falcon ride, guests will visit a whole-new Star Wars planet, experiencing different and multiple missions similar to the current Star Tours ride.

The land will feature in-universe food and drinks, as well as merchandise like you might find in a real marketplace in a galaxy far, far away.

In addition, Imagineering noted how the land was inspired by Istanbul and Morocco, and the design team took a trip there for inspiration. The planet Batuu where Galaxy’s Edge takes place will feature shops and experiences with intricate backstories in that feel like a part of true Star Wars tradition.

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, CA and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, FL sometime in 2019.

Meanwhile, the world will finally see the newest chapter in the Skywalker saga this week. Here is the synopsis for The Last Jedi:

“In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.”
