Mads Mikkelsen was in two of the biggest blockbusters at the tail-end of 2016 in roles that couldn’t be more different, playing a heroic scientist and father to the protagonist in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as well as the bad guy Kaecilius in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. While the former was casting-against-type, Kaecilius was right in the wheelhouse for the Danish actor, who previously played a James Bond villain and Hannibal Lecter. Now, with the film’s home release imminent, deleted scenes and concept are out offering more on Mikkelsen’s character and his followers, the Zealots. You can check out more on Kaecilius and his fellow villains below.
In this new deleted scene (coming on the heels of another villain-centric one), we witness Kaecilius and the Zealots take command of the church they use to perform their dark ritual, “take command” here meaning “killing a priest after trolling him about the afterlife.” The scene is pretty dark and rather extraneous, so I can see why they cut it; no need to kick the dog (or priest, in this case).
Here’s nine pieces of concept art behind the development of Kaecilius and his Zealots. You can see the evolution of their Dormammu eyes and their magical rituals.
Doctor Strange is available digitally and on Blu-ray tomorrow, February 14.
