Scott Derrickson has been very open about his passion for Doctor Strange, even investing his own money into pitching his ideas to Marvel. His hard work paid off and his vision was recognized on the big screen. While many fans have been enjoying these new Marvel characters, not everyone is on board.

Yahoo Movies UK tweeted, “Let’s hope Rachel McAdams is the last great actress to play a useless superhero girlfriend.” The headline grabbed the attention of Derrickson, who quickly defended the character and McAdams.

“She saves 2 lives, morally contrasts the protagonist, experiences magic. Oh, and she’s nobody’s girlfriend,” tweeted Derrickson. Furthermore, he added that McAdams character does a lot of “saving.”

The decision is ultimately up to the fans to decide how they feel about McAdams’ Christine Palmer. The box office results have been incredibly successful for Strange. Strange will cross the $100 million U.S. mark. The 14th entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has also earned $240.7 million at the international box office and culminates to $339.6 million worldwide.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange is in theaters now.

Wow some people are just ridiculous. The character doesn’t need defending at all. She was great and without her Dr. Strange is dead.

  • Darthmanwe

All true points that he made, and she is not one of those clichés…

But that doesn’t change the fact that they wasted a great actress in such a tangential role. Script gave her… nothing. Nothing to work with.

    • Axxell

Maybe she didn’t want a big role?

      • Darthmanwe

Hah! An actress of her caliber deliberately wanting a smaller, less challenging role?

        C’mon man, get real.

        • Axxell

Why do you think Anthony Hopkins keeps coming back to the role of Odin? It’s not because he has less caliber than McAdams…

          • Darthmanwe

Anthony Hopkins is god knows how old. The man earned the right to sit back and earn his paycheck. Rachel McAdams is nowhere near that in her career. Nor the age.

          • Axxell

You don’t need to be a certain age to choose your roles…She can pick to do whatever she wants, and if she doesn’t want to commit to a large role in a huge franchise like the MCU, she’s already old enough to make that decision.

    Such an waste of talent.
