Along with the impressive opening weekend box office total that Doctor Strange managed to accumulate this weekend, the latest release from Marvel Studios also has something else to boast coming out of its opening weekend, as it became the first movie to play on over 1,000 IMAX screens.
Doctor Strange hit a huge 1,001 IMAX screens this weekend, which contributed $24.2 million towards the box office total.
The impressive opening weekend and enhanced amount of IMAX screenings brings Doctor Strange‘s worldwide box office total up to $325 million, with China being a large contributor to that after the movie opened there to $44.3 million. That amount of ticket sales places it in third place for Marvel Studios opening weekends in China, only falling behind Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War on the list. Not too bad considering this is the first appearance of Doctor Stephen Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with both of the top two films being sequels featuring characters that had already been established in the world of Marvel Studios.
Going even further up than Marvel Studios, Doctor Strange‘s impressive worldwide ticket sales so far also brings Disney up to $6 Billion in theaters for the first time ever.
Dr. Stephen Strange’s (Benedict Cumberbatch) life changes after a car accident robs him of the use of his hands. When traditional medicine fails him, he looks for healing, and hope, in a mysterious enclave. He quickly learns that the enclave is at the front line of a battle against unseen dark forces bent on destroying reality. Before long, Strange is forced to choose between his life of fortune and status or leave it all behind to defend the world as the most powerful sorcerer in existence.
The Scott Derrickson-directed Doctor Strange is in theaters everywhere now.
