This December Donnie Yen and the rest of the cast of Rogue One will be appearing on the big screen in the first Star Wars anthology film. Not much is yet known about Yen’s character Chirrut Îmwe but from the trailers, it’s shown that Îmwe is blind. During a recent interview with Jet Set Magazine Yen opened up about what filming was like, why he made certain character choices and why his family helped encouraged him to join the Star Wars franchise.
Yen explained that he was worried about being away from his family so long in order to complete filming. His family’s support helped to make the decision in the end.
“Truthfully, I didn’t want to spend five months apart from my family, filming in London. I asked [my children], ‘how do you feel about daddy doing Star Wars?’ and they flipped out!”
Yen’s children got fully into the Star Wars spirit for Halloween, his youngest son dressed as his dad’s character and his daughter dressed as a First Order stormtrooper.
When it came to developing character traits for Îmwe, Yen was able to add his own touches, including the decision to make his character blind.
The film stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Jonathan Aris.
Fans will soon be able to decide what their thoughts on the film are when Rogue One arrives in theaters on December 16th.
Following the foundation of the Galactic Empire, a wayward band of Rebel fighters come together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s rule.
