Did The ‘Elseworlds’ Crossover Tease Green Lantern?

As far back as Barry Allen’s first appearance on Arrow, the Arrowverse has had no shortage of Easter eggs for fans of DC Comics lore. The crossovers are obviously no exception, and the current “Elseworlds” event is chock full of them. But one major theory regarding one of the characters from Arrow specifically may have been confirmed during the Arrow portion of the crossover last night, all thanks to John Wesley Shipp’s Barry Allen from Earth-90.

The Earth-90 Barry Allen only had two brief appearances during “Elseworlds” last night, but during one appearance when he actually spoke to Kara, Barry, Oliver, and both Team Flash and Team Arrow about what the Monitor was planning, he took one look at Diggle, referred to him as “John,” and asked why he wasn’t wearing his ring. To Earth-90 Barry, things were more different on other Earths than he realized.

One of the longstanding theories in regards to the Arrowverse is that John Diggle is actually John Stewart — yes, Green Lantern John Stewart. And while there have been nods to Hal Jordan in the Arrowverse in the past, as far back as The Flash in its first season with a mention of a test pilot who disappeared from Ferris Air, there’s been little, if anything, that tied Diggle to John Stewart. But it appears that on Earth-90, Diggle is indeed a Green Lantern.

And then, during the “Elseworlds” crossover, Stephen Amell tweeted out a gif of John Stewart from Justice League Unlimited. Well, that would just add to the speculation, but do you know who, among the many people, responded to that tweet? David Ramsey. Here, have a look.

In an episode that was chock full of Batman Easter eggs that accompanied the visit to Gotham City and the introduction of Ruby Rose’s Batwoman, the confirmation that, at least on Earth-90, Diggle is a Green Lantern, is sure to make many a fan happy because of all the speculation. Like the references to Kord Industries, we’ll have to wait and see if there will ultimately be a payoff to these nods or if they’re just fun easter eggs.

What do you think? Would you want to see John Diggle become a Green Lantern in some form or fashion? Or do you believe there won’t be any payoff to this on Earth-1? Let us know in the comments below.

The “Elseworlds” crossover event concludes tonight with a new episode of Supergirl at 8 P.M. on The CW.
