After having played Lois Lane on the WB/CW drama Smallville for six years, Erica Durance is joining the DC TV Universe once again, but on Supergirl. Entertainment Weekly revealed today that Erica Durance is boarding the third season, but not as a new character. She will be playing Alura Zor-El, mother of Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), a character who was previously played by Laura Benanti.
Despite the fact that Benanti’s character passed away at the start of the show, the producers clearly have something big planned for Alura. Executive producer and showrunner Andrew Kreisberg spoke about the addition of Durance while talking about the situation with Benanti and why she isn’t portraying the role anymore.
“Unfortunately Laura, who Greg [Berlanti] and I have worked with for years going back to Eli Stone, was unable to continue in the role due to work commitments in New York. But we are so blessed that Erica has come aboard to offer her own interpretation of Kara’s mother. We had tremendous success with a former Lois Lane last season with Teri Hatcher. We know Erica will continue the proud tradition of legacy actors joining our shows and creating new and exciting takes on classic DC characters.”
Erica Durance is now the second Lois Lane actress that Supergirl has brought on. Teri Hatcher, who played the iconic reporter on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, portrayed Queen Rhea, Mon-El’s (Chris Wood) mother in the recent season.
Supergirl Season 3 is slated to premiere on Monday, October 9 at 8/7c on The CW.
