Ever since it was first announced by Warner Bros. that Ben Affleck had been cast to play Batman in Zack Snyder’s follow-up to his 2013 film Man of Steel, the film fan community has been very vocal online about their thoughts on the actor playing the role. When Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hit theaters early last year, the film was met with very mixed reviews, to say the least, but the one thing that most fans and critics seemed to agree on, almost across the board, was that Ben Affleck made for one hell of a Batman.
Affleck has since gone on to make a cameo appearance as both Batman and Bruce Wayne in Suicide Squad later in 2016 and will again reprise the role later this year in the highly-anticipated Justice League, but even so, the actor’s future in the role is still in question. It seems that every statement Affleck (or even those close to him) makes or whatever piece of news that finds its way out from the WB/DC camp is heavily scrutinized by just about anyone with internet access.
The point of this article is not to predict whether or not Affleck will continue to play Batman past his next slated appearance (as many of us hope he will), because the truth is, no one will definitively know one way or another until after Justice League hits theaters this November. This article is meerly a compiled list of everything we have heard up until this point regarding Affleck’s future as the Dark Knight.
Sure, Affleck very well could already have one foot out of the door, but the studio doesn’t want to say so in fear of hurting Justice League‘s box office numbers. Even despite the critical and financial success of Wonder Woman earlier this year, many are still unsure about whether or not Warner Bros. has this whole DCEU thing figured out. Losing Affleck as Batman could be a huge blow to the cinematic universe that is still in its infancy, resulting in a hole that might prove impossible for the studio to dig themselves out of. That being said, for those of us that would love for him to continue on in the role and have a lengthy run (and believe me, there’s nothing this writer wants more), that may be equally possible as well and everyone could just be blowing this whole thing out of proportion. Nothing is for certain, though, until we get official confirmation one way or another from Warner Bros., because, as will become apparent in this article, some just aren’t willing to take the actor’s word for it anymore.
