After directing one of this summer’s hottest movies, Straight Outta Compton-helmer F. Gary Gray has found his next gig. The director has officially announced that he has signed on to direct the next installment of the Fast and Furious franchise for Universal, which is titled Furious 8 and is set to be released on April 24, 2017.
Over the past few days we’ve had plenty of reports about the filmmaker being one of the frontrunners to direct the action film, as well as him being one of the early contenders in line to direct Marvel’s Black Panther, but now that he has signed to direct Furious 8, it’s safe to say that’s no longer the case. Here’s how the director announced the news via twitter.

The last entry of the franchise earned over $1.5 billion dollars at the worldwide box office and was directed by James Wan who had an offer to return for the eight movie, but had to pass in order to focus on Aquaman and other projects. Gray has previously worked with plenty of the Fast and Furious stars including Vin Diesel, and has plenty of critically acclaimed films under his belt, so it looks like Universal have found themselves the perfect pick to take over the mantle from Wan.
