J.K. Rowling, the creative mind behind Harry Potter and the rest of the Wizarding World, is no longer staying silent on the controversy surrounding Johnny Depp’s casting as Gellert Grindelwald in the Fantastic Beasts film series.
Depp first appeared as the character at the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, where it was revealed that Colin Farrell’s Percival Graves was really Grindelwald in disguise. As Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald will likely feature the character more than its predecessor did, several members of the film’s crew have come out in support of the decision to keep Depp in the role.
Rowling released a statement on her website to address fan concerns regarding Depp’s casting ever since the actor was accused of domestic violence:
“When Johnny Depp was cast as Grindelwald, I thought he’d be wonderful in the role. However, around the time of filming his cameo in the first movie, stories had appeared in the press that deeply concerned me and everyone most closely involved in the franchise. Harry Potter fans had legitimate questions and concerns about our choice to continue with Johnny Depp in the role. As David Yates, long-time Potter director, has already said, we naturally considered the possibility of recasting. I understand why some have been confused and angry about why that didn’t happen.”
Rowling acknowledges the difficulty surrounding the situation but states that she in agreement with Yates on allowing Depp to continue to play Grindelwald in future Fantastic Beasts films:
“The huge, mutually supportive community that has grown up around Harry Potter is one of the greatest joys of my life…However, the agreements that have been put in place to protect the privacy of two people, both of whom have expressed a desire to get on with their lives, must be respected. Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable sticking with our original casting, but genuinely happy to have Johnny playing a major character in the movies.”
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is directed by David Yates, based on a screenplay by J.K. Rowling. The film stars Eddie Redymayne as Newt Scamander, Katherine Waterston as Tina Goldstein, Dan Fogler as Jacob Kowalski, Alison Sudol as Queenie Goldstein, Ezra Miller as Credence Barebone, Johnny Depp as Gellert Grindelwald, Jude Law as Albus Dumbledore, Zoe Kravitz as Leta Lestrange, Callum Turner as Theseus Scamander and Claudia Kim as Maledictus.
The film is set to be released in theaters on November 16, 2018.
