‘Fast & Furious 9’ Delay Prompts Tyrese Gibson To Call Out Dwayne Johnson

Gal Gadot Chris Evans Academy Fast Furious Tyrese The Rock Dwayne JohnsonYesterday, Universal Pictures announced that the ninth installment of the Fast and Furious film series had been pushed back one year to April 10, 2020, and franchise star Tyrese Gibson has taken to Instagram to express his displeasure towards Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Following the well-received chemistry between Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw in The Fate of the Furious, Universal reportedly began the development of a spin-off centering on the two bantering characters. Gibson, who first appeared in 2 Fast 2 Furious, pleaded with Johnson to postpone the potential spin-off to avoid delaying production on the ninth Fast and Furious film in a series of since-deleted Instagram posts. With confirmation that the ninth film will now be pushed back a full year from the initial release date, Gibson has returned to Instagram to call out Johnson and even took shots at his co-star’s critically panned Baywatch film:

“#PSA Congratulations to @TheRockand your brother in law aka 7 bucks producing partner @hhgarcia41 for making the fast and the furious franchise about YOU – And like you, DJ even if they call I will not be deleting this post – Gn folks see you in 2020 April #FastFamily right? Nah….. it’s about #TeamDewayne #3yrs will it be worth the wait? #NoShaw just Hobbs will this be another #BayWatch? Guys guys just relax I’m just a passionate film critic.”

While Universal did not provide a reason for their decision to postpone the ninth film, it appears Gibson is arguing that the developing spin-off featuring Johnson is the cause of the delay.

As of today, Fast and Furious 10 is currently scheduled to be released in theaters on April 2, 2021.
