Although Fast and Furious 9 has been pushed back to 2020, Universal Pictures is still very well keeping the engine warm when it comes to the long-running street racing franchise.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the Fast spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham is now set for release. The two actors will be stepping back into the driver’s seat and into the roles of series favorites Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw.
Screenwriter Chris Morgan, who has been writing for The Fast and the Furious franchise since 2006’s The Fast and the Furious: Toyko Drift will be handling the upcoming spin-off’s script. Universal Pictures chairman Donna Langley spoke on the film’s announcement and how it’ll kickstart the expansion of the Fast and the Furious films:
“The global brand of Fast & Furious is strong and full of iconic characters, and we look forward to continuing to build on the film that started it all, as well as expanding into different narratives beginning with our first spinoff.”
Although there are no deals that have been reportedly made with the actors, the Fast and the Furious spin-off is set to race into theaters on July 26, 2019.
UPDATE: While the studio is not attaching a director until Morgan turns in the script, Universal is reportedly eyeing Iron Man 3 director Shane Black to helm the first-ever Fast spin-off according to Variety.
