‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Recap: S2E5 Captive

Fear The Walking Dead is showing what happens to survivors of the zombie apocalypse during the early stages of the apocalypse and so far our survivors have been learning slowly but surely.

This week’s episode picked up where “Blood in the Streets” left off. Audiences learned more about Strand’s backstory and the new individuals that have taken the boat hostage and now as the boat progresses so do the stories and the tension between our main characters. Apparently, Terminus isn’t the only place of horrific humanity in the apocalypse.

Fear started off showing what the world was like during the early days of the zombie apocalypse, it has now shifted towards the style that made AMC’s original series The Walking Dead so popular, focusing on the characters and the dynamics of this new world and how it impacts them. This line from Daniel Salazar (Rubén Blades) sums up this new world and its dynamic perfectly, “True men of terror, never say how frightening they are.”

5. Alicia

Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) is being held against her will with Connor (Mark Kelly) and is desperately trying to be reunited with her family. This is the first time that Alicia is being faced with this new world and understanding that you cannot trust anyone around you. She realizes that she is on a boat which is completely stuck on land, far removed from her family. As a character Alicia is developing and starting to learn her surroundings.

Alicia starts to get closer to Jake, learning the ways that their group operates. The fact that Alicia’s family hasn’t been dropped on shore is finally revealed to her and she fights back against Jake. The other boats in the area are holding people hostage. Alicia even fights a pregnant woman and wins, all for the chance to protect her family.

4. Jake/New Characters

Fear The Walking Dead is slowly introducing new characters and increasing the conflict between our main group of survivors and these new individuals. Jake and Connor have Alicia and the rest of the crew has attempted to take over Strands yacht. Jake starts to question his main loyalty and says that he will go with Alicia to help find where her family ended up.

3. Mexico

A question has been in play since our characters boarded Strands boat, where is the boat headed? Would they stay out at sea the entire time? Season two has explained that the boat is headed for Mexico and that Strand and Carlos were the only two supposed to be making this journey. Carlos explains that he has money for two people, plans for only two people and the realization is setting in that this trip might not be as safe, or planned out as original perceived.

Strand also encourages Madison to stop treating the children like kids, this is a new world and they must be prepared to fight back constantly.

2.  Travis Reunites With Alex

Travis is also being held captive at an undisclosed location and it is the same location that the other survivors, including Alex (Michelle Ang) that they sent away from the yacht have ended up on. Travis feels deep remorse for letting their crew go and not being able to save them. Audiences know this individual from the web series of Fear The Walking Dead that took place on an airplane. Travis wonders if his group would be able to become better than that, if they would be able to rise above fear and try to help people instead of turning them away.

Alicia and Travis find each other and realize that they are being held on the same boat and that the rest of the group is in danger. Travis says that no matter what, Alicia should not come back for him and if she has a way out should take it.

1. Finally Victory

Madison says that she will trade the others. They have Connor’s brother and in exchange for her family, they will give him back. The official news of the exchange comes too late as Chris already killed Connor’s brother saying that he was going to turn into a zombie. Once Chris realizes what has happened, he begs Madison to understand that he had to kill him in order to prevent him from turning but the deed has been done.

It’s important to note that Chris didn’t kill him with a headshot, allowing him to still turn into a zombie. Daniel pins him up against the wall as proof that this turn took place. Apparently, it’s still unclear that the only way to prevent a human from turning into a zombie is a headshot.

Madison goes off to complete the exchange, with a full zombie in the boat. The exchange becomes a zombie feeding frenzy and Travis and Alicia reunite with Madison. In the end, while there is still a learning curve, our survivors are starting to embrace this world and kick some ass.
