Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has confirmed that the Guardians of the Galaxy will have changed somewhat when we see them team-up alongside the Avengers as they take on the mad Titan, Thanos, next year in Avengers: Infinity War.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 is a bit of an anomaly in the Marvel cinematic universe as the sequel breaks the chronological order of the films and takes place just months following the events of the first Guardians setting it before Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain American: Civil War, and Doctor Strange as well as the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok.
While promoting the upcoming release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 last week, members of the cast including Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana opened up about why they were initially anxious to join the next blockbuster on Marvel’s calendar which Bautista explained that the characters would be made to be something they weren’t under the direction of The Russo Brothers.
But it turns out that the galaxies unlikeliest heroes will have grown a bit when we pick up with them in Infinity War. Feige confirmed this during a conversation with Cinemablend at the Guardians 2 press junket when he was asked whether or not Infinity War will discuss what’s been happening to them since the events of Vol.2:
“Yeah. They will have evolved slightly, in some recognizable ways. But really they’ll be the Guardians and dealing with the shit storm they have to deal with.”
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 hits theaters May 5, 2017, with Avengers: Infinity War currently slated for release on May 4, 2018.
10 Things We Would Like To See In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is almost upon us, but we’re already talking about what’s next for our favorite ragtag group of cosmic heroes. It’s already been announced that writer/director James Gunn will return for a third outing in the Marvel franchise, with the upcoming sequel getting positive buzz on social media based from early screenings. Of course, the Guardians are also due to return for the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War films as well, teaming up with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes against Thanos as he gathers the Infinity Stones together to wield ultimate power.
Gunn commented on Facebook that the third film will “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.” While Phase 4 hasn’t been officially announced, it’s assumed that this third film will be Marvel Studios’ kick-off movie for their next batch of films, most likely eyeing a May 2020 release.
With a third Guardians of the Galaxy film on the horizon, where could they possibly go for the next movie?
