Ready Player OneEntertainment Weekly has revealed the first look at legendary director Steven Spielberg’s film adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi novel Ready Player One by author Ernest Cline.

Set in a dystopian future where the poor live trailer homes stacked on top of eachother, the story full of ’80s pop culture references follows teenager Wade Watts (Ty Sheridan) as he journeys into the virtual reality game OASIS with the objective of finding a hidden easter egg but in order to do so, first, he has to find three keys and unlock three gates.

Wade is an ’80s aficionado who uses the online alias of Parzival as he enters the world of OASIS using his a virtual reality visor and haptic gloves which he keeps in an abandoned van at a junkyard, referring to his hideout as “My refuge. My Batcave. My Fortress of Solitude.”

While Spielberg has opted to ignore his own films which helped define the cinema of a generation, the original novel’s author Cline told the magazine, as part of their San Diego Comic-Con preview, that he wouldn’t have become a writer if it wasn’t for the visionary director:

“If I hadn’t grown up on a steady diet of Steven Spielberg movie. His work directly influenced the narrative and the way that I told the story. So to have him directing, it’s too perfect to even be possible. And somehow it’s happened.”

OASIS offers its players an escape to better times of the past compared to the world of 2044. With the games creator having passed away, he’s left behind a final game allowing players to solve a series of pop-culture quests a wins the OASIS, as well as its parent company, Gregarious Games. And so the race against the clock begins as the game could become locked away from its player or possibly made too expensive to play if acquired by the corporate IOI organization. Wade along with fellow players Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), Aech (Lena Waithe), and I-R0k (T.J. Miller) must discover the keys and unlock the gates to find Halliday’s easter egg to keep the game from falling into the hands of  IOI’s murderous chief of Oology, Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn).

The first images will make Spielberg fans feel right at home as they transport us back to the days of Amblin Entertainment revealing Wade Watts in his hideout full of ’80s nostalgia, as well as nods to the original book and newspapers referencing the OASIS creator James Halliday, played by Mark Rylance in the film. You can check out all of the images in the gallery below.

The film stars Tye Sheridan, Mark Rylance, Simon Pegg, Olivia Cooke, T.J. Miller, Hannah John-Kamen, and Ben Mendelsohn.

Ready Player One hits theaters March 30, 2018.

Cline is a horrible writer, that book certainly has great ideas in it though, but the story is basically 22nd Century Willy Wonka.
