This season of The Flash has seen some major changes brought about by the Flashpoint paradox created by Barry Allen’s meddling with time. While not all of these changes have turned out for the better, one thing the Scarlet Speedster has been able move forward in a positive direction has been his relationship with Iris West, played by Candice Patton. Speaking to IGN at an event celebrating the upcoming 100th episode of Arrow, Candice Patton discussed the relationship between Iris and Barry and also commented on the upcoming crossover event between all four CW superhero shows.
When asked how she felt about being part of an ever-growing TV universe, Patton expressed her enthusiasm and had high hopes for a 100th episode of The Flash as well.
“It’s a testament to what DC TV has been able to do on The CW. It gives us hope as Flash cast members that in a couple years maybe we’ll be here doing the same thing. I don’t know that any of us imagined that it could be this big going into four different shows, so I am really lucky to be a part of this. I’m excited that hopefully I’ll be here for [The Flash’s] 100th episode.”
Unfortunately, it seems that for the time being Iris herself won’t be crossing over into the other CW superhero shows.
“I’m afraid this season she is not crossing over. I know, I know! I’m always advocating for it, but there’s a lot of characters across four shows. It’s got to make sense, and I guess this year it didn’t make sense. She’s very much involved in the crossover that happens in The Flash, we just don’t see her crossover to Legends, Supergirl or Arrow.”
While Iris may be sticking to her corner of the ‘Arrowverse’ for the foreseeable future, Patton assures fans that Iris will be meeting some fan favorite characters from the other shows when they crossover into The Flash.
“Yeah, all of the fan favorites Iris gets to meet. It’s really cool. Even getting to see Supergirl/Kara fly for the first time doing those stunts. It’s… I geek out as well, because we don’t have that on our show. Grant [Gustin] just kind of zips in and zips out. Using a harness to fly up is cool for us!”
In the meantime, Iris and Barry will continue to navigate their new romantic relationship. Fans concerned that the angst and turmoil that usually accompanies a superhero’s love life will also plague Iris and Barry’s relationship have little to fear, according to Patton.
“I think it’s fair to say that if there’s any superhero that could have a healthy, normal relationship, it’s Barry Allen. One thing about Barry is his relationships and his family is really important to him. It’s what makes him a superhero. Yes, I think we can expect to see a very healthy, normal relationship with Barry and Iris this season.”
Patton explained that exploring the relationship between Iris and Barry has been a welcomed opportunity.
“I think it’s just been a long time coming. I think we’ve all kind of known that Barry and Iris were destined to be together, it just had to come at the right time. It’s more of a relief to get to play those iconic moments with Barry and Iris.”
The four-part crossover event between Supergirl, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow is expected to air in November.
The Flash airs on Tuesday at 8:00 pm ET on The CW.
