It looks like Universal is closing in on a director for the next installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, as the studio has reportedly narrowed down the list of potential directors to three.
According to THR, those directors are F. Gary Gray (Straight Outta Compton), Adam Wingard (The Guest) and Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk). The three contenders are said to be meeting with Vin Diesel and studio executives by the end of the week.
Furious 7 grossed over $1.5 billion dollars this year, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of all time. James Wan who directed the film had an offer to direct both 8 and 9 for the studio, but he had to turn the gig down, since he’s going to be busy with Aquaman and other projects for the next few years.
While The Wrap reports that Gray may be the frontrunner to direct Furious 8, Variety reveals that he’s also in the mix to direct another film that is set for July 2018 release which might prevent him from signing on.
