Comic Book Writer Gail Simone Says She Has ‘The Perfect Story’ For A Batgirl Movie

Batgirl DC Comics Gail Simone

Earlier this week, Joss Whedon announced that he was stepping away from the long-awaited Batgirl movie that he was planning to write, direct and produce after failing to crack the story. Many have since shared their thoughts on the matter, but we can now add former Batgirl comic book writer Gail Simone to the list.

Simone took to Twitter this morning to comment on the announcement, saying that she has “the perfect story” for a Batgirl movie. Gail Simone is the writer who’s responsible for the New 52 version of Barbara Gordon, who has recovered from the spinal injury that left her paralyzed after an a violent encounter with The Joker in Batman: The Killing Joke.

You can check out Simone’s tweet below.

When asked if the story would include Alysia Yeoh, Barbara’s transgender roommate in Gotham City, Simone had the following to say:

Simone isn’t the only writer who has expressed interest in the Batgirl movie following Whedon’s exit from the project. Yesterday, New York Times best-selling author Roxane Gay revealed that she’d be open to writing the movie on social media, a comment that drew the attention of Michele Wells, the Vice President of DC Entertainment.

Batgirl may be in a questionable stage of development right now, but Warner Bros. has quite a few DC Films projects on the horizon. Aquaman is up first, hitting theaters on December 21, 2018, followed by Shazam! on April 5, 2019. There’s also the Wonder Woman sequel, which is slated for a November 1, 2019 release.

Justice League DC FilmsNow that Justice League is past us, Warner Bros. is shaking things up. There is now a new head at the studio and with that comes changes. It seems that the studio is easing off the gas when it comes to announcing movies. As of right now there is only Aquaman, Shazam, Wonder Woman 2 and Flashpoint with any sort of true momentum behind them. The Batman, which has a director attached, and a sequel to Man of Steel are also expected, but there’s nothing concrete like release dates for those yet.

The hard part now is figuring out what films Warner Bros. should focus on. There have been numerous films unofficially announced by the studio, with three of them featuring Harley Quinn as a main character. This shows a lack of focus. Now going forward, there needs to be a clear focus as to what movies are coming out.

Here are some suggestions as to what DC films Warner Bros. needs to focus on after Justice League. Click Next to get started!

Just scrap the movie, i actually wouldn’t be upset if Joss wanted to direct the Birds of Prey movie, he doesn’t even have to write it, since there is already someone working on it.
