The Tyrells have always operated behind-the-scenes on Game of Thrones. Now, we get a new look at the scheming of grand-matriarch Olenna Tyrell and her son Mace in a deleted scene from the second episode “Home” of last summer’s sixth season, courtesy of EW. Check out the scene in the embed below!
In the clip, Olenna and Mace are in a caravan in King’s Landing. She berates him for blindly following Cersei’s instructions to Braavos in season 5, allowing the Queen Regent to arm the Sparrows and imprison his children Margaery and Loras. The scene also sets up Olenna’s addition to the Small Council, at Kevan Lannister’s request, as well as the Tyrells’ overarching goal of the season, which is to extract their heirs and let the Sparrows and Lannisters destroy each other. Oh, how plans go awry.
As with all Tyrell material, there’s a mix of humor and goodness to it. As the primary suppliers of food to Westeros now, they’ve always been portrayed as lawfully pragmatic, as opposed to the vindictive Lannisters. It makes sense that, in order to set up the chaos of season 7, the sixth season finale wiped Mace, Margaery and Loras out in the Sept of Baelor explosion, leaving only vengeance left for the Queen of Thorns next year.
Game of Thrones returns for its penultimate seventh season, consisting of seven episodes, in summer 2017.
