Game of Thrones season six gave audiences a lot to talk about, from character twists and deaths to one of the largest battles in television history, Game of Thrones did not disappoint.
Kit Harington recently opened up about what it was like behind-the-scenes working on “The Battle of the Bastards.” The commentary is featured on a behind-the-scenes clip from the Season 6 Blu-ray.
“I have had more s–t thrown at me than any other actor on this show.”
Co-creator David Benioff explained that the context for this battle was created by researching and reading actual accounts of medieval and classic wars.
“You read accounts of battles in the Civil War, where the bodies were piled so thick, it actually became an obstruction on the battlefield.”
The battle took 25 days to film in Northern Ireland. That’s just the battle, not the episode itself. For perspective, usual TV episode production turnaround is 8-12 days. HBO did not release a full budget for the episode, but it averaged $10 million an episode this season (to give you a comparison, Season 2’s acclaimed battle episode “Blackwater” cost $6 million). This one assuredly cost more, maybe much more, almost certainly making it the most expensive episode in the show’s history.
The sixth season of Game of Thrones will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD on Tuesday, Nov. 15th.
