Fans have been waiting for The Winds of Winter, the sixth installment in author George R.R. Martin beloved A Song of Ice and Fire novels, for over five years. According to the author, they’ll probably going to have to wait at least six.

Martin wrote on his LiveJournal (via Winter Is Coming) that his upcoming appearance at the Guadalajara International Book Fair in Mexico would be his last public appearance of 2016 and his 2017 schedule was limited by his number one mission – finishing The Winds of Winter.

Martin’s books form the basis for the global sensation Game of Thrones but the show’s relentless production overtook the solitary writer’s pace last year with its sixth season. With its seventh season in production and an eighth and final one planned, Martin keeps toiling away on his own penultimate volume of his seven-part series. The final installment, the existentially-titled A Dream of Spring, remains a twinkle in his eye.

On the bright side, Martin says the Mexican sojourn will be the last opportunity to see “for a few months,” which is an optimistic time frame as opposed to “for a few years.” Not that it communicates the book is actually close to done, but when you’re jonesing for some new Westeros tales from GRRM, you take what you can get (hence this article).

Game of Thrones‘ seventh season consists of seven episodes and premieres next summer on HBO. The Winds of Winter remains without a release date.
