Ghost in the Shell
The live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell has been released and the controversial film is poised to lose Paramount $60 million or more. A number of factors could have contributed to the film’s dismal box office performance, including the contentious decision to cast Scarlett Johansson in what could have been a prominent role for Asian actress. However, there was once a time where a different actress was considered for the role of Major and now conceptual artists Jeff Simpson and Nivanh Chanthara have shared their illustrations produced when actress Margot Robbie was in the running to play the lead character.

Jeff Simpson shared his work along with a few words on his brief time on the project.

“I spent a tiny amount of time doing pre-production work for the new Ghost in the Shell. These were done back in 2013? 2014? When Margot Robbie was gonna be the lead. Only spent a few days on it, but it was fun.

Nivanh Chanthara also commented on his time working on the project.

“I’ve worked on the very first batch of environment concept art for the Ghost In The Shell movie. At this time , the project wasn’t even greenlighted and Margot Robbie was considered for the role. It was an incredible rush and one of the first time I had to produce so much in a very small.”

    >>>” have shared their illustrations produced when actress Margot Robbie was in the running to play the lead character.”

She wasn’t “in the running to play the lead character”.
The role was OFFERED to her (as in, she didn’t have to audition for it and win it against other actresses competing for it) and they were all but ready to go with her as the lead before she ultimately turned it down to do Suicide Squad instead and also because she (wisely) felt she wasn’t ready to helm or open a brand new franchise like this as the headliner.
    A wise decision in retrospect.

It also puts paid to all those claims by people stating that ScarJo was cast because they needed a “big name actress” to “put butts in the seats” – hence (part of) the reason for whitewashing.
When the role was offered to Robbie, she was a virtual unknown in Hollywood having only barely just opened Wolf of Wall street and not having any other major movie credit to her name outside her native Australia.

What she an ScarJo have in common?
White, blonde, blue-eyed and definitely not Japanese.

Are there NO asian actresses in Hollywood? What about even in acting school?

    • Bill

      The Major isn’t Asian

Yes she is. And if she isn’t, why would she DEFAULT to being white, you Trumpette??
