The live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell has been released and the controversial film is poised to lose Paramount $60 million or more. A number of factors could have contributed to the film’s dismal box office performance, including the contentious decision to cast Scarlett Johansson in what could have been a prominent role for Asian actress. However, there was once a time where a different actress was considered for the role of Major and now conceptual artists Jeff Simpson and Nivanh Chanthara have shared their illustrations produced when actress Margot Robbie was in the running to play the lead character.
Jeff Simpson shared his work along with a few words on his brief time on the project.
“I spent a tiny amount of time doing pre-production work for the new Ghost in the Shell. These were done back in 2013? 2014? When Margot Robbie was gonna be the lead. Only spent a few days on it, but it was fun.
Nivanh Chanthara also commented on his time working on the project.
“I’ve worked on the very first batch of environment concept art for the Ghost In The Shell movie. At this time , the project wasn’t even greenlighted and Margot Robbie was considered for the role. It was an incredible rush and one of the first time I had to produce so much in a very small.”
