Despite it being clear and apparent who Polaris’ father is, we’ve yet to hear the the M-word on Fox’s hit television series The Gifted. According to series showrunner Matt Nix, there’s a couple of reasons behind that decision. Speaking with TVLine, Nix explained why we never heard Magneto directly named during the first season of the mutant drama.
“Not to be coy, but we don’t want to stumble into movie territory. That said, canonically, Polaris’ father is Polaris’ father.”
While The Gifted team is doing their best to avoid stepping on the toes of what Fox is doing with mutants on the big screen, they are still sticking as close to Polaris’ origins as they can without doing so. Nix dived deeper into that and how them not actually doing it has worked out for them when it comes to her character’s story.
“One thing that we do use from the comics, that is legitimately part of the lore of Polaris, is that she doesn’t always know that Magneto is her father. And she has very mixed feelings about Magneto being her father, so we’ve taken what is kind of a necessity, in terms of us needing to stay out of the way of the movies, and turned it into a virtue in our eyes.
It’s now a feature of the characters that they don’t really want to talk about — [that Lorna’s father is] the leader of the mutant group that made mutants look horrible and kind of put them in the position that they’re in now.”
Nix is having plenty of fun with it and even compares it to a certain Harry Potter character stating that there is “a little Voldemort to it, if that makes sense!” While I’m personally hoping that they do manage to touch a bit more on Lorna’s past, I do completely understand their reasoning for not namedropping Magneto in the series.

‘The Gifted’: 10 X-Men Characters That Need To Appear In Season 2
The Gifted just wrapped its first season to much praise from fans and critics. Fox has already renewed the series for a second season. A new perspective of the X-Men’s world, from the point of view of average citizens, was a refreshing change of pace. The X-Men and the Brotherhood are gone, meaning that most of the iconic X-Men characters won’t be making an appearance anytime soon. Yet that doesn’t seem to be a problem since there are hundreds of mutants to draw from. The movies have barely scratched the surface of the vast array of mutants.
The show has been able to highlight characters like Polaris, Thunderbird, Blink and even the Stepford Cuckoos. In Gifted’s second season, Fox should continue to highlight lesser known mutants and X-Men concepts from the comics.
