The Godzilla franchise was responsible for the Western popularity of kaiju films long before the 2014 reboot by Gareth Edwards or the 1998 masterpiece starring Matthew Broderick. Many Americans currently familiar with the works of Toho would likely be entirely unfamiliar with the Japanese production company if not for their work on the prehistoric, radiation-breathing behemoth. But Toho’s actually been out of the game for quite some time, failing to produce a Godzilla film since Godzilla: Final Wars in 2004.
This will soon change, as the new film co-directed by Hideaki Anno (Evangelion) and Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan) is slated for a Japanese release on July 29. There is no word as of yet regarding US and UK release dates, but recently leaked pictures offer fans a glimpse at the overgrown lizard’s new look. It should be noted that the following pictures are still an unfinished product, as the film promises to bring Anno’s script to life using a mixture of practical effects and modern CGI.
Not only is this version of Godzilla reported to be taller than the one brought to us by Legendary Pictures in 2014, but his teeth have grown in wildly and he appears to be sporting some ghastly radiation scars. Since Godzilla: Resurgence is meant to be a reboot of the original Toho franchise, these scars are likely not from an old foe. Expect Godzilla to suffer some wounds while fighting a new human or kaiju threat when he reaches Japanese theaters this summer.
