On the fourth season of Gotham, Bruce Wayne will move closer towards his destiny as he adopts a secret identity to take on the criminals of the eponymous city. In an interview with Comic Book Resources, showrunner John Stephens discussed the reasons behind Bruce’s choice to become a vigilante and how close the young hero is to becoming the Batman.
Stephens explained why Bruce Wayne has decided to adopt a secret identity and take his first steps towards becoming a masked vigilante:
“A couple of different things — the biggest thing motivating him at the beginning of the year is the knowledge of Ra’s al Ghul being out there, perhaps in Gotham. Bruce feels he needs to prepare himself for the day that Ra’s actually makes a move against him. That motivates him into taking a more active “vigilante” position in Gotham. While Bruce is doing that, he actually starts to see he physically has an effect on the city itself, apart from whatever Ra’s might be doing, and that it feels to him like he’s somehow making up for the murder of his parents. It starts to make Bruce think, “Hey, maybe this is the right course for me to follow.”
While it may appear as though Bruce Wayne is closer to becoming the Caped Crusader than ever before, Stephens stated that there are still a few steps before Bruce and the rest of the characters become the heroes and villains fans know from the comics:
“Bruce is not going to be wearing the costume. Selina is always going to be steps away from becoming Catwoman. But, I do hope by the end of the season, you’ll be able to look at Gordon or Bruce or Selina and say, “Oh, now I can totally track the next three or four or five steps that will take them to the person they are.” There are enough building blocks that are there that you can do the math problem yourself, and see that it equals Batman at the end of the day.”
