In a recent interview, Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Infinity War star, Chris Pratt weighed in on whether or not Groot was dead.
The subject has been hotly debated among fans who seemed to have been confused over whether or not everyone’s favorite tree monster died at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy or not. At the film’s climax the character encased his friends in a protective shield made of his own body to guard them during a crashing ship. At the end of the film a new Groot could be seen growing and would later be featured as a major character in Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2. The question, however, was whether or not the character was the same.
Chris Pratt recently have his take on the whole thing:
“It’s a little like this, how I look at it and of course James would be the guy to ask, but how I’ve always seen it and I think it falls in line with that is I am a father. have a son. I can be gone one day, but my flesh will still live on. It’ll live on through my son. Granted, I share genetics with my son’s mom, but with Groot he’s like an asexual being so he continues to move on, but it is its own life defined by a birth and a death of its own.”
Such a theory was first argued by the film’s writer/director, James Gunn, who insisted that the original Groot was, in fact, dead and this new character was more or less his child. Regardless of whether or not this Groot is the original we will be seeing him team up with other Avenger characters in Avengers: Infinity War. Here is a plot synopses for that film:
As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.
