‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’: Michael Rooker Knows That Film Was Made For Him

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 Yondu Michael RookerMichael Rooker is indeed Mary Poppins, y’all. Even though Yondu was a casualty of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, that hasn’t stopped Michael Rooker from acknowledging his love for the film, his friendship with James Gunn, and how he’s recognized just as much as Mary Poppins as he is Yondu.

While at the Heroes and Villains Fan Fest in Nashville, Michael Rooker spoke with Comicbook.com about his work on both Guardians Vol. 2 and The Walking Dead, noting that while at one point he was more recognized as his Walking Dead character, Merle, nowadays people are looking for Mary Poppins, so Rooker has to, as he said, pull out his umbrella every now and then:

“I never thought there’d ever be a day when I’m talking and I hear people going ‘Look, it’s Mary Poppins! Dude, it’s crazy,” Rooker said.

Additionally, Rooker noted that he always expected the film would resonate with audiences the way that it did, saying that the movie was made for him. Rooker was also asked about a possible return of Yondu in the upcoming Captain Marvel film, given that the film will take place in the 1990s.

Michael Rooker, though, admitted that with both Marvel Studios and AMC in regards to a return for Merle on The Walking Dead, he jokingly said that neither studio would probably be able to afford him anymore. Fair point, as Mary Poppins must no doubt charge a pretty penny.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Starlord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Vin Diesel as Baby Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket Raccoon, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Kurt Russell as Ego the Living Planet, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Michael Rosenbaum as Martinex and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord/Starhawk. The film is available now on Digital HD, 4K, Blu-Ray, and DVD.

10 Cosmic Heroes We Want To See In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’

Previous1 of 11

It’s official: James Gunn has confirmed that that he will be returning to both write and direct the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which is just phenomenal news. Gunn has created something really special with these films. He took third-tier (at best) comic book characters that most fans didn’t yet know they needed to love and turned their story into not one, but two blockbuster movies that are major hits, both critically and commercially.

In his Facebook post, Gunn stated that Guardians Vol. 3 will “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.” He also made a brief mention of “some of the other forthcoming heroes” that could be appearing in the series. With these things in mind, we thought it would be a wonderful idea to explore some of the cosmic Marvel characters that fans might like to see in the third installment.

Before we jump in, a couple caveats. While it would surely be a lot of fun to see some of the Earthbound MCU characters mixing it up with the team in space, this list is only going to feature cosmic-based Marvel characters. The film will hit theaters after the Guardians’ introduction to Tony and Cap and the gang in Avengers: Infinity War, so we may still see that happen anyway. Also, I’m sure there are plenty of fantastic cosmic villains that would be great fits to antagonize the team in the third film, but we’re only focusing on the good guys in this list. Also, as amazing as it would be to see Silver Surfer or Galactus in the MCU, we’re not including anyone that Marvel doesn’t currently own the rights to, so don’t expect to see Agent Venom or Kitty Pryde or any of the other non-MCU characters that have served on the team in the comics on this list either. Also, it should be noted that I have not yet seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so if any of these characters do appear, my apologies for the wasted entry.

Now, without further adieu, here are the 10 cosmic Marvel heroes we want to see in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Hit the next button below to begin!
