‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2’: New Ego Concept Art Revealed

Ego MCU Villain

A newly-revealed piece of concept art from Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 shows us another early design for Kurt Russel’s character Ego the Living Planet.

The artwork, created by character designer/concept artist Michael Kutsche, was shared on Reddit. As previously revealed, the character of Ego was originally codenamed J’Son, who was actually Peter Quill/Starlord’s real father in the Marvel comics. Writer/director James Gunn decided to change the character’s linage in the film version from J’Son to Ego the Living Planet.

You can check out the concept artwork in the Reddit post below:

Interestingly enough, while Kurt Russell was eventually cast in the role of Ego, the artwork above actually looks a bit more like John Hurt (who passed earlier this year) or X-Men and Lord of the Rings star Sir Ian McKellan. Perhaps Hurt or McKellan were originally considered for the role.

Written and directed by James Gunn, the film stars Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Starlord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Kurt Russell as Ego, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Michael Rosenbaum as Martinex and Sylvester Stallone as Stakar Ogord/Starhawk.

Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is available now on Blu-Ray, 4K Ultra HD, DVD and Digital HD.

10 Cosmic Heroes We Want To See In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’

Previous1 of 11

It’s official: James Gunn has confirmed that that he will be returning to both write and direct the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which is just phenomenal news. Gunn has created something really special with these films. He took third-tier (at best) comic book characters that most fans didn’t yet know they needed to love and turned their story into not one, but two blockbuster movies that are major hits, both critically and commercially.

In his Facebook post, Gunn stated that Guardians Vol. 3 will “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.” He also made a brief mention of “some of the other forthcoming heroes” that could be appearing in the series. With these things in mind, we thought it would be a wonderful idea to explore some of the cosmic Marvel characters that fans might like to see in the third installment.

Before we jump in, a couple caveats. While it would surely be a lot of fun to see some of the Earthbound MCU characters mixing it up with the team in space, this list is only going to feature cosmic-based Marvel characters. The film will hit theaters after the Guardians’ introduction to Tony and Cap and the gang in Avengers: Infinity War, so we may still see that happen anyway. Also, I’m sure there are plenty of fantastic cosmic villains that would be great fits to antagonize the team in the third film, but we’re only focusing on the good guys in this list. Also, as amazing as it would be to see Silver Surfer or Galactus in the MCU, we’re not including anyone that Marvel doesn’t currently own the rights to, so don’t expect to see Agent Venom or Kitty Pryde or any of the other non-MCU characters that have served on the team in the comics on this list either. Also, it should be noted that I have not yet seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so if any of these characters do appear, my apologies for the wasted entry.

Now, without further adieu, here are the 10 cosmic Marvel heroes we want to see in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Hit the next button below to begin!
