Star Wars: The Last Jedi lead Mark Hamill recently attended a panel at the New York Comic Con. While the Luke Skywalker actor didn’t talk too much about Star Wars while he was there, he did shed a little light on the role that Carrie Fisher’s Leia would have played in the closing chapter of the saga.
USA Today was able to transcribe Hamill’s remarks at NYCC, with the actor noting that he was impressed with Fisher’s final film performance before going on to explain why she would have been more prominent as a character in Star Wars Episode IX:
“You’re going to really love her in [The Last Jedi]. I know they’re going to try and find a way to close her story in [Episode IX] that gives her the respect she deserves, because [Han Solo] was more prominent in [The Force Awakens], Luke’s a little more prominent in [The Last Jedi], and certainly Leia was meant to be more prominent in [Episode IX]. Worldwide, everyone feels that gap she left, but we all have to hang in there.”
While it’s still upsetting to know that Fisher won’t be with us to celebrate the Star Wars Saga’s conclusion, it’s reassuring to know that – from what Hamill is suggesting – Leia will be very much a part of Episode IX‘s story in spite of her actress’ passing.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will rise on December 15, 2017. The movie’s cast includes Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke, Domhnall Gleeson as General Armitage Hux, Benicio Del Toro as “DJ”, Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, and Jimmy Vee as R2-D2.
