Lucasfilm made waves this morning when they officially announced the next chapter in the Skywalker Saga would be titled Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi. But no one expected to hear a response to the title from the last Jedi himself this soon. In an interview with the Associated Press earlier today, Mark offered his reaction:
“It’s got a real samurai — you know — it’s straightforward and minimalist and I like that.”
As we all know, the franchise has looked back to the films of Akira Kurosawa for inspiration since the original Star Wars, but The Last Jedi won’t be looking back to old samurai films just for influence on the title. At Star Wars Celebration last year in London, the film’s director Rian Johnson revealed a list a film’s he had the cast watch which included Three Outlaw Samurai. You can check out the full list here but what is important to note is that Three Outlaw Samurai ends with (spoiler alert) the death of a heroic warrior.
While the title reveal for The Force Awakens was met with a mixed reaction, the response to The Last Jedi has been overwhelmingly positive. The title isn’t ominous, corny, or on the nose such The Phanton Menace, Attack of the Clones, or Revenge of the Sith. The title itself signals the film will have a clear focus on Luke Skywalker and the legacy of the Jedi.

Daisy Ridley also shared a hilarious meme on Facebook with the caption “meme game so strong”.
