‘Star Wars’: Rian Johnson On Working With Carrie Fisher & His New Trilogy

Star Wars The Last Jedi General Leia OrganaIt’s been three months since Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit theatres. The film was met with divisive reactions. Critics praised the storytelling while some fans of the series found themselves missing some of the saga’s hallmarks. There’s much to discuss about the film, and this year at SXSW Rian Johnson was joined by Mark Hamill to do just that.

The panel was meant to discuss The Director and the Jedi, the upcoming behind the scenes documentary about the making of The Last Jedi. However, the discussion quickly turned to all things Star Wars. This even included Johnson briefly discussing his upcoming trilogy:

I’m still at the very, very beginning of the process but I can tell you I’m really excited”

Johnson went on to discuss working with the late Carrie Fisher as well. He spoke of the pressures he faced directing two legendary actors:

“It’s a conversation — and in this case it’s a very intense conversation. I couldn’t say, ‘Screw you, this is my story,’ You have to get into the conversation.”

Delving deeper into his relationship with Fisher, Johnson recalled her difficulty with watching herself onscreen:

“I remember her telling me, ‘In my head, I’m still in my twenties,’ There’s always going to be that disconnect when you see yourself onscreen.”

Hamill arrived late into the panel, joking that it was just another “cameo at the end.” Once he took the stage, Hamill discussed the insecurities that came with returning to the character of Luke. He regrets announcing those insecurities in public because it wasn’t long before he realized that Johnson “is always right.”

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio del Toro.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be released on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray/DVD on March 27th and will be available digitally tomorrow.
