Hawkeye Is Still A Fugitive In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Jeremy Renner Hawkeye AvengersThe fact that Hawkeye would return for Avengers: Infinity War has never been a secret, but what role he actually will have in the film, conversely, has been closely guarded. However, even that has changed a few days out from the release of the film, as it’s officially been revealed to the press that the archer has good reason to be separate from everyone else at the beginning of the massive storyline.

Thanks to Entertainment Tonight, we have a clearer idea as to Hawkeye’s status in Avengers: Infinity War — he’s a fugitive from the law. Joe and Anthony Russo explained Hawkeye’s situation as follows:

Joe: Uhh, Hawkeye… We can’t tell you, but I will say this about Hawkeye. We knew when we were working on Avengers 3 and 4 that we had a lot of story real-estate there. Especially with the original Avengers, we wanted to make sure that they each had satisfying stories, and we knew that we had both movies to do that in. So, it is more of a long play with Hawkeye than a short play.

Anthony: But it is grounded in his story moving forward from Civil War. There’s a narrative, there’s a reason, for his absence or not absence from this.

Joe: He was a fugitive at the end of that movie, so we have to answer that question.

The other Avengers that sided against registering the Avengers in Civil War were also branded as fugitives — Captain America and Falcon teamed up with Black Widow to fight terrorists on an international level, the Winter Soldier went to Wakanda to put himself in cryostasis until a cure for his mental conditioning could be found, Scarlet Witch went into hiding in Europe with the Vision so the two could spend their lives together, and Ant-Man managed to get away scot-free from the looks of things with the Ant-Man and The Wasp trailer (presumably because he wasn’t a part of the team when the schism happened). Hawkeye, conversely, seems to have no such luck, even after returning to his family (something that doesn’t last, from the sound of things) — and given that his small role is still crucial to the overall story they’re telling with the next two Avengers movies, that might make for all the more interesting a narrative.

Avengers: Infinity War will be released on April 27, 2018, with a cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautisa, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Rudd, Benedict Wong, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Benicio Del Toro, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor, Terry Notary, Carrie Coon, and Josh Brolin. Here’s the official Infinity War synopsis:

As the Avengers and their allies have continued to protect the world from threats too large for any one hero to handle, a new danger has emerged from the cosmic shadows: Thanos. A despot of intergalactic infamy, his goal is to collect all six Infinity Stones, artifacts of unimaginable power, and use them to inflict his twisted will on all of reality. Everything the Avengers have fought for has led up to this moment – the fate of Earth and existence itself has never been more uncertain.

The currently-untitled Avengers 4 features a cast made up of many of the key players in Infinity War — alongside newcomers like Brie Larson and Evangeline Lilly — and is scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2019.
