HBO is reportedly discussing a new prequel to its hit television series Game of Thrones. According to Variety, the network is exploring the idea of a prequel that would delve into Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros. Although the project is still in the early stages, HBO is said to be eager to get it into development and is currently searching for a writer to bring the story to life.

For those unfamiliar with the series, Game of Thrones is based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire books. The series gained a massive following for its depiction of a brutal fantasy world filled with warring factions vying for control of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Aegon I Targaryen is a crucial figure in the lore of Westeros, as he was the first Targaryen king to conquer the Seven Kingdoms and unite them under his rule.

While details about the new Game of Thrones prequel are scarce, Variety reveals that HBO and Warner Bros. are also considering a feature film that would lead into the potential Aegon I Targaryen series. However, plans remain uncertain and the project could still change or be shelved altogether.

The season one finale of House of the Dragon, titled “The Black Queen,” brought in 9.3 million viewers upon its premiere on HBO, the biggest finale viewership for the network since the final episode of Game of Thrones in 2019. The episode was leaked two days before its official premiere on HBO and aired at the same time as Sunday Night Football and Major League Baseball.

When does House of the Dragon return to HBO?

A second season of House of the Dragon is currently in development at HBO. The second season begins filming later this year and won’t arrive until 2024 at the earliest, according to recent comments from Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max.

House of the Dragon is set around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and follows House Targaryen – the noble house of Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen from Thrones – as a civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons breaks out between claimants to the Iron Throne.

Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan J. Condal served as co-showrunners on House of the Dragon season one. They also executive produced the season alongside George R. R. Martin. The series features a star-studded cast that includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno.
