Hugh Jackman Speaks Out On His Future As Wolverine

It has been widely reported that Hugh Jackman’s last time in the role of Wolverine will come with the release of the upcoming 3rd Wolverine film in 2017.  As the end approaches it seems even more likely that we might see him pop up in some of the remaining X-Men universe films. Recently at the premiere of his new documentary, Dukale’s Dream, The Huffington Post caught up with him for an interview and asked him some questions pertaining to the X-Men franchise and the various rumors.

The biggest rumor floating around is that he may appear at some point during next years’ Deadpool movie. When asked about this rumor Jackman stated

Hmmm, I can’t … no. Nope,” Jackman mumbled under his lips while giving off a sweet smile. “But, I am really good mates with [Reynolds] so …

It’s obvious that he is trying to keep his mouth shut on this topic, but he seems to be hinting that there is a possibility.

When asked about whether or not he would appear in X-Men Apocalypse he simply responded with an interestingly simple response.

Who knows?

Jackman’s reasoning for his retirement from the role is that he feels that it is the right time to do so. He wants to be able to move on to other projects. He briefly delved into the factors at play in his decision as well ass his own personal doubts about it

There was a period about six years ago when I could see my choices being narrowed by Wolverine, but now I feel like they’ve opened up from doing ‘Les Mis’ or ‘Prisoners’ or ‘Pan.’ The options coming to me right now are more varied than they’ve ever been in my life,” He jokingly added of what’s to come. “Hopefully, I’m not that actor in 10 years who’s unemployed going, ‘Why did I ever leave it?’ and then begging to come back.

He even mentioned how he is grateful to Fox and Marvel for giving him the opportunity to play the iconic role

They were all really supportive — 17 years is a long time,” he said. “And I’m sure that they’ve already started casting, you know? Someone may sign up for an 11-picture deal, as we speak.

He also discussed the emotions he has as well as the physical strain he will have to endure for the upcoming James Mangold helmed Wolverine 3

Weirdly, I’m really excited about shooting it. I feel great enthusiasm, I suppose it’s denial — like the football player who announces their retirement before their last season — and so I’m really looking forward to it. But, I know it’s not over yet! I still got a lot of 4 o’clock mornings and a hell of a lot of egg white omelettes and steamed chicken to have, and all of that. I feel very blessed that I loved playing this part, the last ‘Wolverine’ and that last ‘X-Men’ [‘Days of Future Past’] were maybe two of the best and I feel like, hopefully, we’ll do it again with this last one.

It is apparent that this role has meant a lot to him and he seems to be feeling a wave of multiple different emotions when talking about it. It will be difficult to see the actor that brought the character to the screen leave, but it seems as if Fox is underway of preparing to cast a new actor to play the part and that they are determined to keep building upon their franchise with or without Hugh Jackman in the role.

Deadpool will be released on February 12th, 2016

X-Men Apocalypse will be released on May 27th, 2016
