‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ Announced

Fans of the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day can rejoice with the official announcement of a sequel appropriately titled Independence Day: Resurgence. The film is currently shooting in Albuquerque, but journalists were invited to the set for a special press conference that was also streamed online. Several details about the film were revealed.  

In addition to the press conference that occurred the title was revealed in a short teaser.

The film will star several of members of the original cast excluding Will smith who turned down the sequel.  The cast includes Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Angelababy, Maika Monroe, Sela Ward, Jessie Usher and Liam Hemsworth.  Returning director Roland Emmerich joins them all for this film.

The official synopsis was also announced:

Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.

Independence Day: Resurgence will be released on June 24th, 2016.
