Marvel’s Inhumans show has been criticized for a number of things, but one thing that stuck out even before the first trailer dropped was that the costume design was widely-criticized. Some newly-released concept art for the series reveal that originally, a number of characters were going to get more elaborate outfits.
Concept artist Mark Brooks has released his concept art for three different character designs on the show:
As production on the show was incredibly tight, the illustrations were done in two days – and unfortunately, these weren’t used in favor of simpler and less comic-like designs. Similar issues plagued Iron Fist, which was also handled by showrunner Scott Buck and hit with a similarly negative reception from critics – although it appears as though Iron Fist has a greater number of fans than Inhumans, as the show was successful enough to warrant getting a second season, while it’s looking increasingly likely that this show will be one-and-done with sharply-declining ratings.
One wonders if Inhumans would have been in better hands if the project had more time in development, with a larger budget and more resources dedicated to it. Or perhaps the project was doomed from the start – it’s been suggested that the reason the movie was removed from Marvel’s schedule had everything to do with there being a lack of passion behind the project from people working for Marvel’s movie division, and based on the underwhelming results that the television show has produced so far, it seems as though those concerns were correct.
Inhumans airs on ABC on Friday nights. The show’s cast includes Anson Mount as Black Bolt, Serinda Swan as Medusa, Iwan Rheon as Maximus, Ken Leung as Karnak, Eme Ikwuakor as Gorgon, Isabelle Cornish as Crystal, Mike Moh as Triton, Sonya Balmores as Auran, and Ellen Woglom as Louise.
7 Reasons Why ‘Marvel’s Inhumans’ Failed
The premiere episodes of the ABC Marvel’s Inhumans has already aired with good ratings for ABC, stronger than the Season 4 of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the final season of Agent Carter but this does not mean it is a success.
Marvel’s Inhumans has been dragged through the mud with critics, many lambasting it as the worst thing Marvel Studios has ever been involved with, and a serious low-point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I have seen these episodes of Inhumans and I can honestly say that ever criticism is apt. It’s even more apt to say that Inhumans has failed as a series because of its incredibly low approval for its pilot episodes. So how did it happen? Who’s to blame? What reasons can be found to why something that Marvel Studios were trying to do for years has now been reviled by many?
