iTunes Set To Offer 4K Movies For Same Price As Digital HD

iTunes 4KApple is shaking up the digital market as iTunes will now offer customers Ultra High Definition films at the same price as the High Definition versions.

The announcement came today during Apple’s special event held at the Steve Jobs theater in Cupertino, CA, along with the unveiling of the new Apple TV 4K. The device will be available to order from the Apple Store beginning September 15, shipping the following week on September 22. The Apple TV 4K beginning at $179 will feature Ultra HD resolution streaming as well as support for high dynamic range (HDR).

The competitive pricing for 4K movies is in an effort to boost Apple TV sales but the lowered cost of 4K movies did not come without friction as the price point was reportedly a contentious issue between Apple and studios such as Warner Bros., Sony Pictures Television, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures, according to Variety.

While streaming services such as VUDU currently offer new films priced between $14.99-$19.99 UHD films typically come at a higher, premium price of $29.99.

In addition to the lowered price point, Apple is also giving iTunes customers a free UHD version of any film they previously purchased in Digital HD that is now available in 4K.

Rumors may be swirling online about one actor or another being up for the role, but as of now no one is the designated front runner. This role, which has huge potential to become a major franchise once the character is given a bigger spotlight, is still open for the taking.
