Flashback: Jake Gyllenhaal Was Almost Cast As Peter Parker For ‘Spider-Man 2’

Spider-Man 2With the internet buzzing over the recent news that Jake Gyllenhaal had been cast as Mysterio in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, it’s worth noting that this is not the first time Jake Gyllenhaal was in talks for a Spider-Man related film, as his history with the wall-crawler stretches to 2004 with Sony’s Spider-Man 2.

When Sony was rushing to get Spider-Man 2 into theaters on schedule, the one obstacle holding everything up was the Peter Parker of the time, Tobey Maguire, who both wanted a pay raise for the sequel and had talked a lot regarding his bad back from riding horses during the filming of the movie Seabiscuit. While Sony had planned to pay more it wasn’t as much as Maguire had demanded.

With all that in mind, Amy Pascal made an offer to Jake Gyllenhaal, putting him in the position of becoming the new Peter Parker at the time if there was a fallout with Tobey Maguire. The plan was a success, when, according to a witness, Maguire and director Sam Raimi hugged it out at Amy Pascal’s home.

As we know, Maguire went on to portray Peter Parker not just in Spider-Man 2, but in the 2007 follow-up, Spider-Man 3 as well. While Maguire has since departed playing the web-slinger, who is now shared by both Sony and Marvel Studios, the story appears to have come full circle for Gyllenhaal, who now finds himself in the position of actually appearing in a Spider-Man film. Albeit as a villain, yes, but in the end, it seems that he just can’t break away from the webhead’s world.

The Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel hits theaters on July 5, 2019. Make sure to keep an eye on Heroic Hollywood as more details on this project come out.
