James Gunn has already revealed that the third instalment of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise will play a pivotal role in setting up the next 10-20 years of Marvel movies, but now he has revealed his involvement in Marvel’s future will extend beyond directing the next Guardians movie.
During a panel at Hasbro’s HASCON, Gunn revealed he is creating movies ‘around’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and told fans:
“I am shepherding the future of the Marvel cosmic universe.”
This comes from MCU Exchange, via Twitter, who tweeted from the event:

While Gunn has been quiet on the details, this seems to confirm that we can expect to see the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe expanding and tying into the Guardians films. Fans have already been speculating about a Rocket solo spin-off after some recent comments from Gunn and the director has previously mentioned Marvel’s interest in Richard Rider, a.k.a. Nova, joining the cosmic universe. Until further confirmation, however, this all remains pure speculation.
While some fans may be wondering about the future of the team of Ravagers inspired by the original comic book Guardians, seen at the end of Vol. 2, all we know on that front is that Vance Astro likely won’t be featured in Vol. 3.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Glenn Close, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, and Kurt Russell. Here’s the official synopsis:
Set to the backdrop of ‘Awesome Mixtape #2,’ Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 continues the team’s adventures as they traverse the outer reaches of the cosmos. The Guardians must fight to keep their newfound family together as they unravel the mysteries of Peter Quill’s true parentage. Old foes become new allies and fan-favorite characters from the classic comics will come to our heroes’ aid as the Marvel cinematic universe continues to expand.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently available on Blu-ray and DVD as well as all digital platforms.

10 Cosmic Heroes We Want To See In ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’
It’s official: James Gunn has confirmed that that he will be returning to both write and direct the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie, which is just phenomenal news. Gunn has created something really special with these films. He took third-tier (at best) comic book characters that most fans didn’t yet know they needed to love and turned their story into not one, but two blockbuster movies that are major hits, both critically and commercially.
In his Facebook post, Gunn stated that Guardians Vol. 3 will “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.” He also made a brief mention of “some of the other forthcoming heroes” that could be appearing in the series. With these things in mind, we thought it would be a wonderful idea to explore some of the cosmic Marvel characters that fans might like to see in the third installment.
Before we jump in, a couple caveats. While it would surely be a lot of fun to see some of the Earthbound MCU characters mixing it up with the team in space, this list is only going to feature cosmic-based Marvel characters. The film will hit theaters after the Guardians’ introduction to Tony and Cap and the gang in Avengers: Infinity War, so we may still see that happen anyway. Also, I’m sure there are plenty of fantastic cosmic villains that would be great fits to antagonize the team in the third film, but we’re only focusing on the good guys in this list. Also, as amazing as it would be to see Silver Surfer or Galactus in the MCU, we’re not including anyone that Marvel doesn’t currently own the rights to, so don’t expect to see Agent Venom or Kitty Pryde or any of the other non-MCU characters that have served on the team in the comics on this list either. Also, it should be noted that I have not yet seen Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so if any of these characters do appear, my apologies for the wasted entry.
Now, without further adieu, here are the 10 cosmic Marvel heroes we want to see in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Hit the next button below to begin!
